The fine art photography exhibition, “Dear Xaymaca,” is a tribute to the character and beauty of the people of Jamaica presented by the photography of Marvin Yves Thomas.
It all started with one picture of my father. It was my attempt to capture the the mood and meaning in his family's face. From there I moved on to members of my community in Spanish Town, and one of its local garrisons Tawespen. Even among the abject poverty that surrounds some inhabitants on this alluring island, there is still something about my people that encourages them to push on and have a love for life.I figured that if I looked close enough I'd be able to see it in their eyes. Jamaica has of 2.8 million residents, such a tiny population with a massive identity. In their faces you're able to see a complete range of emotion from pure joy to absolute pain. Look closely, though, there's history and liveliness deep in the creases of their faces, the softness of their skin, and the clam glow of their eyes.
